Everything Including Diapers!

Many years ago now, my parents invited me along on the holiday of a lifetime with my sister, brother-in-law and their three wee (aged 3-5) girls. How could single-for-the-Lord, committed-to-simplicity Tio Q justify a week holidaying in Orlando, Florida with the rich and famous? Why not try to dedicate my week to helping my exhausted sister get a well-deserved and much-needed break? I could "rise" to whatever need presented itself and just be there to serve. Whenever a need arose, "Voy!" ("I go!"). My motto for the week: "everything but diapers"! I worked hard, and was well-proud of myself and my motto, until I shared the story some years later to a team of young future missionaries. That was when one corrected me, "Everything but … ?? How is that a true servant's disposition?" Okay! I stand corrected: "everything including diapers".

"Will any one of you, who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep, say to him when he has come in from the field, 'Come at once and sit down at table'? Will he not rather say to him, 'Prepare supper for me, and gird yourself and serve me, till I eat and drink; and afterward you shall eat and drink'? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that is commanded you, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'" Lk 17:7-10 RSV
