Servant of the Servants

A good number of years ago now, I was asked to be involved in leadership in the brotherhood I am a part of, The Servants of the Word. (Actually, I was assigned to it and not really asked, as one of our commitments is a vow of obedience.) As I began to lead various things and exercise authority in various ways, something became very clear to me—I did this as a service and as a servant. I did it as one serving God, and I did it as one serving my brothers. My greatest aspiration has (thus) become to worthily lay down my life as a servant of the Servants.

The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!" Jn 12:12-13 RSV
