Life "On Top"

Perhaps you are familiar with the old saying, "If you are one step ahead of everyone else you are a leader. If you are two steps ahead then you are a visionary. And if you are three steps ahead … well then you are a martyr!" There is a painful element of truth to that insofar as there certainly is a price to pay for being a leader. Yes, you can make a difference for good, but at the same time you are a bit of a lightning rod when things get stormy. You pay the price of blazing new trails, of taking people where they do not necessarily initially want to go, of calling things out of people they did not think they could give. And as a friend once said, "The higher up the leadership totem pole you go, the more of your behind is exposed!" So with good reason, more than one ascending leader bemused, "If this is what it's like up on top, then I want to go back down!"

They set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had departed from the land of Egypt. And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness, and the people of Israel said to them, "Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger."
