Dying to Live

by Dave Quintana - Servants of the Word

A dear brother wrote a song for our one-year missionary volunteer programme, Standing in the GAP, called "Morir para Vivir"—"Dying in Order to Live". You could also say "dying in order that others may live". That is the whole point of suffering. Christ suffered for our sake. We suffer for Christ's sake, and we suffer for the sake of others. We suffer and experience hardships and sorrows because of sin in the world and in our own lives, and things not going according to the plans and purposes of God. May this suffering not be for naught. May this suffering not be wasted. There is nothing so wasteful as a wasted sorrow, nothing so pointless as suffering with no good coming from it. May the Lord teach us of "redemptive suffering," of suffering that redemption might come.

As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. 2Tim 4:5-8 ESV
