Moved Within Ourselves?

by Dave Quintana - Servants of the Word

Jesus saw the crowds and had compassion on them, because they were harassed like sheep without a shepherd. For sheep, being not the smartest animals on the face of the planet, this is not a good situation. In Spanish, "had compassion" is translated "se conmovió", that is, "he was moved within himself". The sense there is that it wasn't as if he carefully analyzed the situation, weighed all the pro's and cons, and thought to himself, "Self, this is the kind of situation where in 74 out of 97 situations involving harassed people (or sheep too I suppose), compassion is found to be the most helpful response, so let's put on compassion." NO! He was moved within himself. Something deep in his being stirred. His heart went out to them. He saw their predicament (a more accurate term than "situation") and was moved/disquieted within. Are we like that? Are we moved within ourselves at the harassed state of so many around us?

And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Mt 9:35-36 ESV
