Prefer Nothing to Christ

Those words of St. Benedict are both a command and a challenge. Prefer nothing to Christ, show preferential love for Christ. As a man living single for the Lord, I hope my life is marked, in small things and in big things, by this preferential love for Christ. I hope that my life is a prophetic witness—a daily example—of always putting Christ first, of always choosing Christ above all other things. What a powerful witness would be the Church's if we truly preferred nothing to Christ.

He was still speaking, when lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces, and were filled with awe. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and have no fear." And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. Mt 17:5-8 RSV
